Smart Home – Sin Ming Avenue, Singapore

HDB | Ang Mo Kio, Singapore | 2 Adult, 2 Children

Finding the unit for this project was a bit of an adventure. We initially got a little lost, but our search was made easier when we noticed the D200i smart door lock and a G4 doorbell at the entrance of a unit at the end of the hallway. Sure enough, it was the right place. The doorbell, angled slightly to the left, conveniently offered a clear view of anyone at the door.

The Aqara Smart Lock D200i on the door boasts facial recognition technology – so all it takes is one second for the lock to scan your face when you walk up to it to unlock – after which all it takes is a simple push of the wooden door to gain entry (as long as you’re authenticated!)

For the lighting, they opted for recessed down lights throughout the house, ensuring a clean, modern look while providing excellent illumination. To highlight the exquisite carpentry features, we incorporated LED strips that subtly accentuate the craftsmanship.

A great example of this is in the common bathroom, where we showcased the versatility of our smart downlights. Each downlight can be controlled individually or grouped together, allowing for easy adjustments in brightness and color temperature. During our testing, we set the left downlight (pictured) to a slightly warmer tone, and the right one has to cooler hue. You can see the slight difference in this photo.

In typical usage, both lights should be set to the same temperature and brightness, and this can be achieved through grouping of the lights in the app so that they’ll remain consistent.

In the master bedroom, we installed smart, motorized double pleated curtains that provide both convenience and comfort. Homeowners can control the curtains remotely with a smartphone or even from the comfort of their bed. We also set up automation scenes, such as opening the curtains in the morning (at the owner’s request) to let in natural light. We also created an automation to close the curtains at 8.00 p.m. for privacy.

To further enhance ease of use, wireless switches were placed near the bedside table, allowing users to control the curtains with a simple tap—just like a traditional wall switch, but without the need for physical wiring.

When it came to the switches, we carefully selected designs to complement the overall aesthetic. In areas with carpentry, the champagne-colored H1 switches blended seamlessly with the warm tones of the wood. For walls with a lighter, white background, we opted for the sleek and timeless H1 white switches to maintain a minimalist look.

In addition, we left an empty gang on the main door switch, creating space for a master “all off” scene that allows the homeowners to turn off all lights with the push of a button before leaving the house.

At the heart of this smart home setup are two M3 hubs—one placed on the top floor and another on the bottom floor. These hubs ensure seamless connectivity for all the devices throughout the house. Since all of our devices are Apple HomeKit compatible, we assisted the homeowners in adding each device to their Apple Home app, enabling easy control via their iPhones or other Apple devices.

This includes Siri voice commands, enabling the owner to activate Morning, Evening, Night, and other scenes through Siri on their HomePods, iPhones, and Apple Watches.
