This is the most important choice in the range. A motion sensor is fast, small and battery-efficient. A presence sensor is designed to keep detecting a person after the obvious movement stops.
Best for movement and passage
Choose a motion sensor
PIR motion sensors react when a person moves across their detection area. They are wire-free and well suited to places where people normally pass through rather than remain still.
- Corridors, stairs, entrances, storerooms and wardrobes
- Turning lights on quickly when movement begins
- Battery-powered placement without a nearby outlet
Best for occupied rooms
Choose a presence sensor
mmWave presence sensing can recognise small movements from someone working, reading, watching television or resting. It helps prevent lights or air-conditioning from turning off while the room is still occupied.
- Living rooms, bedrooms, studies and other longer-stay spaces
- Reliable presence and absence automations
- Zone-level control with FP2, or simple room occupancy with FP1E and FP300
Presence is not automatically better everywhere. Use it where still occupancy matters. A compact motion sensor is often the cleaner, faster and more economical answer for passageways and short-use areas. Mixing both sensor types around one home is normal.

Configurable PIR motion detection with adjustable timeout and sensitivity. A straightforward choice for fast passage and room-entry automations.
Thread/Matter PIR motion and light sensing. Choose it when the intended ecosystem has a compatible Thread border router and Matter controller.
Simple room-level mmWave presence and absence sensing without zone mapping. Best when reliable still occupancy is the main requirement.
Maps up to 30 zones in a room and can detect multiple people. Choose it for location-based automations rather than a single occupied/unoccupied signal.
Combines PIR and mmWave with light, temperature and humidity sensing. A wire-free presence option with protocol choice.
Doors, windows and objects
Know whether an opening or object changed state, then alert the household or run an automation.
Compact two-part sensor for open and closed states on doors, windows, cupboards and other suitable openings.
Matter-over-Thread alternative for openings. It needs a compatible Thread border router and Matter controller.
Detects vibration, movement and drop events on a suitable object, drawer or window where a contact sensor is not the right signal.
Choose either open/close mode or object-monitoring mode. It can learn position and report selected orientation, movement, fall or vibration events.

Climate and comfort
Use measured room conditions as context for air-conditioning, ventilation, alerts and everyday comfort.
Small battery sensor for temperature, humidity and air-pressure readings without a display.
Adds a large temperature and humidity display and three control buttons. Zigbee mode unlocks its fuller Aqara Home functions.

Leaks, smoke and gas
Place detectors near the hazard they are intended to recognise, not merely where they are easy to see.
Detects water across its underside contacts. Place near washing machines, sinks, water heaters or other credible leak points.
Detects smoke, sounds a local warning and can send remote notifications through the connected Aqara system.
Designed for combustible-gas detection with a local alarm and connected notifications. Suitability depends on gas type and installation conditions.
Zigbee, Thread or Wi-Fi
Choose the right sensor protocol for your hub and platform.
Protocol affects the hub or controller required and which advanced settings remain available. Choose the ecosystem first; do not buy a Thread model simply because it is newer.
Aqara Zigbee sensors
Use a compatible Aqara Zigbee hub. This is usually the most direct route to full Aqara Home settings, local automations and a broad range of Aqara devices. Selected hubs can bridge supported devices into Apple Home and other Matter ecosystems.
Thread and Matter sensors
Need a compatible Thread border router and Matter controller. Dual-protocol models such as FP300, W100 and P100 can instead be added in Zigbee mode; features may differ between modes and a device cannot use both modes at the same time.
FP2 is the exception in this range: it connects directly by Wi-Fi and does not need an Aqara hub for its core zone-presence functions. Its USB power and placement still need planning.

A good sensor plan is not “one in every room”. Each device should have a defined detection area, a compatible connection and a response that still makes sense during normal life.

Smart sensor automation examples

The most useful automations combine the right sensor with time, light level, home mode or another condition, so the response fits what is really happening.
Lighting that follows use
Turn on corridor lights when motion begins, keep a study lit while presence remains, or use measured light level so daytime movement does not trigger unnecessary lighting.
Comfort without guesswork
Use occupancy, temperature and humidity as conditions for air-conditioning or ventilation, then stop or adjust them when the room is genuinely empty.
Alerts that deserve attention
Notify on a door opening while away, water where it should not be, or a local smoke or gas alarm. Schedules and modes keep routine activity from becoming noise.

What is the difference between a motion sensor and a presence sensor?
A PIR motion sensor reacts to movement and is ideal for corridors, entrances and short-use spaces. A presence sensor uses mmWave, or combines mmWave and PIR, to detect smaller movements from someone who remains seated or still. Use presence sensing where lights or air-conditioning must stay on while a room remains occupied.
Do Aqara sensors need a hub?
Most do, but the required infrastructure differs. Zigbee sensors need a compatible Aqara Zigbee hub. Thread sensors need a compatible Thread border router and Matter controller. Dual-protocol models can be commissioned in either Zigbee or Thread mode. FP2 connects directly by Wi-Fi for its core functions.
Should I choose Zigbee or Thread sensors?
Choose for the ecosystem and features you plan to use. Zigbee is the established route to Aqara Home features and local Aqara automations through an Aqara hub. Thread/Matter can connect through compatible third-party ecosystems, but controller requirements and available settings differ. A newer protocol is not automatically a better fit.
Which presence sensor should I choose: FP1E, FP2 or FP300?
Choose FP1E for simple powered room-level presence through Aqara Zigbee. Choose FP2 when you need mapped zones, multi-person positioning or a direct Wi-Fi connection. Choose FP300 for wire-free installation with combined PIR/mmWave presence plus light, temperature and humidity sensing, using either Zigbee or Thread.
Can smart sensors work without internet?
Many Aqara Zigbee automations can run locally through a compatible hub after setup, but exact behaviour depends on the devices, hub and chosen ecosystem. Remote notifications and app access from outside the home generally require internet access.
Where should I place a water leak sensor?
Place it on a level surface where water is likely to collect early: near a washing machine, under a sink, beside a water heater or close to another credible leak point. Its contacts must be able to reach the water; placing it somewhere merely visible may not provide early detection.
Can I mix different sensor types in one home?
Yes. Motion sensors suit passageways, presence sensors suit occupied rooms, contact sensors monitor openings, and climate or safety sensors answer different questions. A well-planned home normally combines them rather than forcing one sensor type everywhere.
