Choose the extra function

Most Aqara hubs do more than connect devices.

Choosing an Aqara hub is usually less about the basic hub role and more about the extra function you need in that location. Decide whether that should be air-con control, a camera, a speaker, PoE connectivity or broader Thread and Matter support. Different Aqara hubs can coexist in the same home.

What an Aqara hub does

The hub links devices, automations and the apps you use.

Most Aqara Zigbee switches, sensors, lights and curtain controls communicate with a compatible Aqara hub rather than connecting directly to your Wi-Fi router. The hub then makes those devices available to Aqara Home and supported smart-home platforms.

Selected newer hubs also act as Thread Border Routers and Matter Controllers. Those are separate roles from being a Zigbee hub, so match the hub to the protocol used by the products in your plan.

Products with an Aqara hub built in

Cameras, doorbells and control panels can also be your hub.

A separate standalone hub is not automatically required if another product in the plan already provides the correct hub and protocol functions. Choose the product for its main job first, then confirm whether its hub capacity and placement suit the rest of the home.

Camera hubs

G2H Pro, G3, G350 and G5 Pro are both cameras and Aqara hubs. The plain Camera E1 and Camera G100 are not hubs, and the G400 video doorbell camera is not a hub.

Aqara hub questions.

Do I need an Aqara hub?

Most Aqara Zigbee products need a compatible Aqara Zigbee hub for app control, scenes, automations and supported smart-home integrations. Aqara Thread products need a compatible Thread Border Router, and Matter control depends on the products and platform chosen. Check each product's protocol rather than assuming one rule covers the full range.

Is an Aqara hub the same as my Wi-Fi router?

No. Your Wi-Fi router connects the home to the internet and carries normal network traffic. An Aqara hub creates or coordinates the smart-device network and links compatible devices to Aqara Home and supported platforms. The hub itself then connects to the home network through Wi-Fi or Ethernet, depending on the model.

How many Aqara hubs do I need?

It depends on the home's size, walls, layout, device count and where devices are installed. Permanently powered Zigbee devices such as selected neutral-wired switches, smart lights and curtain motors can repeat the Zigbee signal, while battery devices do not. Start with a sensible placement and verify signal quality in the completed home before adding hubs solely by a fixed square-foot rule.

What is the difference between Zigbee, Thread and Matter?

Zigbee and Thread are wireless protocols used by smart devices. Matter is an interoperability standard that can operate over networks including Thread and Wi-Fi. A Zigbee hub, Thread Border Router, Matter Controller and Matter bridge are different roles; newer Aqara hubs may provide several of them in one product.

Can I use different Aqara hubs in one home?

Yes. A home can use different hub models in different rooms—for example, an M3 as the main hub, M200 hubs where air-con control is needed, and a camera hub where monitoring is useful. Choose each location and function deliberately.

Can an Aqara camera or doorbell work as a hub?

Selected products can. Aqara products explicitly named Camera Hub, including G2H Pro, G3, G350 and G5 Pro, provide hub functions. The Video Doorbell Hub G410 and Panel Hub / MagicPad S1 Plus also include hub roles. Plain Camera G100 and Video Doorbell Camera G400 are not hubs.

Which Aqara hubs can control an air-conditioner?

M200 and M3 provide 360-degree infrared control for compatible air-conditioners, while the G3 camera hub also includes an IR controller. Because infrared normally needs line of sight, place the hub in the same room as the air-conditioner. Exact app and smart-platform features vary by hub.

Will Aqara automations work if the internet is down?

Many compatible Aqara automations can run locally through the hub after setup, but behaviour depends on the hub, devices and automation. Remote access, push notifications, weather, geofencing and other cloud-dependent functions still require internet. M3 adds more extensive local Edge and multi-hub capabilities.
