Plan

Renovating, or already moved in

Renovation is the easiest time to plan, while the wiring and carpentry are still being done. If you’ve already moved in, most things go in without hacking walls: smart switches replace your existing ones, and sensors, buttons and some curtain motors run on batteries.

If you’re renovating

Tell your interior designer and electrician early. These are the points to settle before the electrical work and carpentry are done.

  • Switches Decide where each light and fan is controlled from, and whether you want neutral or no-neutral smart switches. That decides the wiring your electrician runs to each switch point. Neutral or no-neutral Counting your switches
  • Lighting Settle your lighting plan before the ceiling goes up: which lights go on smart switches, which are smart downlights or strips, and which you’d like to dim. We don’t recommend smart lights without smart switches: turning a normal switch off cuts power to the smart light, leaving it offline and unresponsive to your apps and automations.
  • Curtains and blinds Wired curtain motors need a power point near the end of the track, and your curtain pocket needs room for the track and motor. Plan both with your carpenter.
  • Door locks Choose your lock before a new door is made or fitted, so the door’s thickness and cut-out fit the lock. How to choose a door lock
  • Water heater To schedule your storage water heater, plan a smart 20A switch for it.

If you’ve already moved in

Most of a smart home goes in without renovation work.

  • Sensors and buttons Sensors and wireless switches run on batteries and stick on, so they go anywhere without drilling or wiring.
  • Switches Smart wall switches replace your existing ones in the same wall box. If a switch point has no neutral wire, a no-neutral smart switch fits it.
  • Smart light bulbs If your lights take E27 or GU10 bulbs, you can swap in smart bulbs, with no rewiring. E14 smart bulbs are coming soon. Aqara LED Bulb T2
  • Curtains and blinds Battery-powered curtain motors work where there’s no power point near the window. If your current track can’t take a motor, we make you a new one in our own Singapore factory.
  • Door locks We check your door before we recommend a lock, so the one you choose fits it.
  • Air-con Our air-con controllers send the same infrared commands as your remote control, so they work with the air-con and fans you already have.
